1st class upgrade

You can switch classes in the NS app or in Mijn NS:

1. Log in to Mijn NS
2. Switch to 1st class
3. Choose for how long you would like to switch: today, up to a certain date, or open-ended
4. Press ´Confirm´

Prefer switching back to 2nd class? You can revert back to your original class in the NS app or in Mijn NS.

If you expect you will be travelling in 1st class more often, you can switch classes for one month or more. All you have to do is order one of our 1st-class NS Flex vrij season tickets in Mijn NS. After a month, you can switch back to a 2nd-class season ticket.

2. Go to ´Products´
3. Click on ´Change season ticket´
4. Pick your current season ticket and select 'Standard 1st-class travel as an extra option´

Prefer switching one or more days? You can upgrade to 1st class up to 15 minutes after checking in via the NS app or Mijn NS.

3. Choose for how long you would like to switch
4. Select ´Confirm´

Please note: All travel outside your Vrij season ticket is 2nd class without a discount. With NS Flex Traject Vrij you get a 40% discount on off-peak travel beyond your fixed route in the same class as your season ticket. If you have NS Flex Traject Vrij 1st class, you can travel in 1st class on other routes as well.

If you opted for an off-peak discount as an extra with your NS Flex Weekend Vrij season ticket, you get a 40% discount when travelling in 2nd class in off-peak hours. You can also opt to travel in 1st class.

If you have a season ticket on balance, you purchase a class change ('Toeslag' or surcharge) on the day on which you want to use it. Check which situation applies to your season ticket.

• Weekday and weekend supplement with a discount season ticket:
  • Weekdays: when upgrading to 1st class, you pay the 2nd class fare applicable to your season ticket, plus a supplement of 80% of that 2nd class fare for travelling in 1st class.
  • Weekends and public holidays: when upgrading to 1st class, you pay the 2nd class fare applicable to your season ticket, plus a supplement of 40% of that 2nd class fare for travelling in 1st class.
• Travel 1st class for 1 month with a Vrij season ticket: supplement depends on your season ticket.
• Travel 1st class for one day with a Vrij season ticket: supplement depends on your season ticket. For a full list of NS fares, please check page 16 of our NS Fares PDF.

For all on-balance season tickets , Dal Vrij, Altijd Vrij and the Student travel product, the following applies:

1. Go to an NS ticket machine
2. Scan your OV-chipkaart. On the display, select "Download miscellaneous products"
3. Select 'Supplement 2 -1'
4. Choose your preferred version
5. Follow the payment instructions
6. Scan your OV-chipkaart a second time

Your 1st-class upgrade will take effect immediately and last until 4 am.

For on-balance season tickets, Dal Voordeel and Altijd Voordeel season ticket, the following applies:

Weekdays

1. Go to an NS ticket machine
2. Scan your OV-chipkaart
3. Select 'Change class' on the screen
4. Select '1st class today'
5. Follow the payment instructions
6. Scan your OV-chipkaart again

Your 1st-class upgrade will take effect immediately and last until 4 am.

Weekend

1. Go to an NS ticket machine
2. Scan your OV-chipkaart
3. Select 'Change class' on the screen and select 'Supplements 2-1'
4. Select 'Supplement 2-1 weekend'
5. Follow the payment instructions
6. Scan your OV-chipkaart again

Your 1st-class upgrade (2-1 weekend supplement) will take effect immediately and last until 4 am.

Travelling 1st class on a Keuzedag costs € 6. Remember to download the Keuzedag to your OV-chipkaart before you change travel classes.

To change travel classes on your Keuzedag ticket:

1. Go to an NS Ticket Machine.
2. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader.
3. Select 'Change travel class Current: 2nd' on the screen.
4. Select the option 'Supplements 2-1'.
5. Next, select: 'Supplement 2-1 Keuzedag'
6. Follow the payment instructions.
7. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader again.

Your upgrade to 1st class is valid immediately, and will remain valid until 04:00 in the morning.

Vrij season tickets

• Toeslag 2-1 Dag: 1st class travel all day long, for € 25.
• Toeslag 2-1 Daluren: off-peak 1st class travel from Monday through Friday (before 6.30, from 9.00-16.00, and after 18.30), for € 10.
• Toeslag 2-1 Weekenddag: 1st class travel all day long on the weekend, for € 6.

Voordeel season tickets

• Toeslag 2-1 Weekenddag: 1st class travel all day long on the weekend, for € 6.
• Vandaag 1e klas: your train fare. Instead of paying the 2nd class fare, you pay the 1st class fare.

Keuzedagen

Travel 1st class all day long on your Keuzedag, for just € 6.

Changing classes via the NS app

You can arrange a class change before or after you have checked in. This can be done up to 15 minutes after checking in.

You can arrange a class change in a few steps:

1. Go to the NS app.
2. Choose 'More' at the bottom right of your screen and then 'Mijn NS'. Is your NS-Business Card not yet linked to the app? Read how to link your card.
3. As you scroll down, you will automatically see the class in which you travel. You can change this to 1st class.

You can also deactivate the class change via the NS app. Or several times a day and turn it back on again.

Tip: do you often want to change class? On the home screen of the NS app, choose 'Add Widget' and then 'Class change'. This way you can arrange your class change directly and extra quickly.

Changes classes via Mijn NS Zakelijk

You can choose between three options: an open-ended class change, a class change for today only, or a class change for a specific date/time. Requests can be made 24 hours a day, but always arrange the change before you check in.

A class change can be arranged in a few steps:

1. Go to Mijn NS Zakelijk.
2. Under 'Directly arrange' choose 'Request a class change'.

Changing classes on the ticket machine

Follow the instructions on the ticket machine. Any class changes made on the ticket machine will automatically remain valid until 4:00 the following morning. You can also reverse class changes on the machine.

Through Mijn NS

You can switch classes through Mijn NS (on the website or in our app) as follows:

1. Log in to Mijn NS.
2. Add your OV-chipkaart or OV-pas.
3. Switch to 1st class from the Mijn NS start screen.

Want to switch back to 2nd class? You can revert back to your original class in the same place in Mijn NS.

At the NS ticket machine

1. Head to an NS ticket machine
2. Hold your OV-chipkaart against the card reader
3. Select 'Change class' on the screen
4. Choose '1st class today' or 'Always travel 1st class

Valid immediately

Your 1st-class upgrade will take effect immediately and last until 4.00 am. When you check out, we'll calculate your fare automatically.

If you have a valid OV-chipkaart or OV-pas but no NS season ticket, you can upgrade to 1st class by using Mijn NS or the NS ticket machine.

The price of your journey will depend on the route you are travelling. You can view the price of your journey for both 1st and 2nd class in the Travel Planner. Make sure you have sufficient balance to pay for your first class journey on your OV-chipkaart or OV-pas.
